Discussion in 'FAQ & Feedback' started by Hummel-o-War, Oct 26, 2019.

?

Did you understand the EXPLANATION on how the CPU and CPU Tier system works?

  1. Got it!

    46.2%
  2. Not really

    17.3%
  3. Do not care / do not see why we need CPU

    36.5%
  1. Fixed that for you.

Would be interesting to know if these 7 do not "understand" how the CPU is working, or if this is just declining the CPU as a whole.

Made the question more precise and added an alternative option to the poll ;)

Totally agree! The more options to customize the game, the better it gets, as it satisfies a greater number of game styles.

I had marked "not really", but after some questions were explained to me, I changed the option.
I am excited for the implementation, I think it will be cool -> not at first, it will take a crazy job balancing the values!

I am one of those seven.

I've watched both videos and read my bad English all the information what are available. I understand the principle, but I am of those people who learn how to properly counter the get to try out in practice how it all works.
So I'm looking forward to seeing these new CPU features. ;)

    Translated from Finnish.

I do think there's merit to @Kassonnade's suggestion, but perhaps a little more restricted. I.e. you cannot just turn off any device you want at random to gain CPU for another - though that would sorta be cool. Rather, if you turn off ALL Thrusters then you gain let's say half of their CPU value back. The same for Turrets perhaps. This way, the "mobile base" CV that many - myself included - love can be preserved. However, it's either working at a Base (Constructors and Turret active, Thrusters Off) or it's flying around with the Constructors disabled. Consider it "flight mode / base Mode" if you will. I love landing my CV's in hostile places and playing defend the CV while building up a support base for it.

Obviously that is a very light overview, but I hope my meaning is understood? Basically, a grounded CV has no need for Thrusters so being able to power up some additional Constructors, Defences or other devices while grounded might be a nice balance. This preserves much of the spirit of CPU - ships are in a specialised mode - but without the over-arching restriction on functionality. I.e. you can still have twelve Turrets, but not all active in flight, deactivate the Thrusters (aka land lol) and the CV can defend its static location more effectively.

    Scoob.

I personally think that the problem this CPU system is trying to solve could be addressed just as effectively with a component power and mass rebalance rather than introducing an entirely new system.

A jack of all trades ship will be big, heavy and either very slow or very expensive depending on how many thrusters and generators you decide to add. Same end result as CPU without the extra rules.

Well the thing is dude, the question doesnt actually ask if you like CPU or if you want CPU or if your declining the feature at all, it only asks if you basically understand whats written on the page effectively, or if you just dont care about, well anything really.
I would hazard a guess that the language barrier will probably cause a few translation issues, bit of misunderstanding there but that wont be an issue I recon as people will learn it just as fast by playing it.

What I find funny are all these people who say they understand it all, yet post questions about it, showing a lack of understanding.

What I read up there, I fully understood, its just English, how whats written up there relates to the actual effects and numbers in game, completely different thing.

Probably no one in this entire forum yet fully understands that.

Its kinda a loaded question dude.

And CPU is pretty complicated, do you really think 80% in here fully understand CPU and how whats written up there relates to the actual numbers and effects in game, I think not.
I think people dont like to be seen as having a lower IQ as any others so they sometimes embellish there answers.

If we questioned that same 80% about whats written up the page, with no references I recon most would be very hard pressed even remembering all of that, let alone remembering it all in game as you build at this early stage of the features release.

Without total honesty, the polls fail.

I voted Not really, because no one really does yet, understand the relationship between whats written up there and how that relates to blocks and physics in the game itself. No one can sit here and go, right with them rules up there , I can build the , literally, perfect ship, first go straight off the bat, only a great understanding of such a system will make that possible.

If everyone in here fully understands whats at the top of this thread, where are all the perfectly suited CPU ships ?
Or could it really be that no one fully understands it all yet !!!
But yes we can all read English good enough to understand whats written up there lol.

Like I said , its a loaded question dude !

Do you fully comprehend how the CPU system works with the explanation written in this thread on this page, is the real question.
    Simple answer is no.

What you describe is precisely how I build, play, and manage my ships. In terms of design and intended use, they all have a combination of switchgear and signal logic circuitry to act as 'mode selectors'. Up until now that functionality has been used primarily for reasons of power management and efficiency, but it would make a lot of sense for it to include CPU usage as well.

Not to mention that someday we'll have a whole Galaxy, rather then just a Solar System, then the game will have to just be un-slowed down. :p

Or even if ya don't & what ya are tryin to stop is already its own heaviness in & of itself. *Seriously doubts people are gonna so easily give up at building Big...*

Hell to the Yeah! +1! ^_^

It's not a Nerf, if what is getting replaced was a OP Godmode that was never Intended to be Permanent in the first place thus was never an actual Balance Point to start with. :)

    *CoughShamelessSelfPromotionCough* :p

For the Topic: Also worthy of mention, that the Devs seem to keep forgetting to do, & I stumbled upon it the hard way & got confused & had to get set straight by the Devs a bit too late...:

    • T0 - Core alone: Intended rough Level Range: 1 - 5ish
    • T1 - Core + T1 Extender x1: Intended rough Level Range: The rough Level Range between the one ya Unlock the first Extender & the Level before ya Unlock the next Tier Extender.
    • T2 - Core + T2 Extenders x2: Intended rough Level Range: The rough Level Range between the one ya Unlock the T2 Extenders & the Level before ya Unlock the Final Tier Extender.
    • T3 - Core + T3 Extender x4: Intended rough Level Range: The rough Level Range between the one ya Unlock the Final Tier Extenders to Max Level.

Accidentally built a L10ish SV & a HV on the T0 Core alone then ran into trouble then couldn't figure out where I was going wrong... felt silly when the Devs explained to me that they never anticipated me trying to build a T0 using stuff that in Survival I couldn't have gotten Unlocked yet. I've been hugging Creative too long...

The more I think about the new CPU system the more OK I am with it. I still would rather see more "natural" ways of balancing vessels by properly balancing components masses/energy usage against each other instead of this arbitrary CPU limit, but I do see the merit of putting some sort of limit on vessel size/complexity as a means of progression.

The only aspect of this CPU system that I REALLY dislike right now is locking the higher tiers behind random POI loot. That's just going to be super annoying IMHO. Sure, lock it behind an end-game resource that a player can steadily work towards, but gating vital components behind RNG is poor game design. It's bad enough already with the auto miner cores, armor (which is necessary on the harsher planets) and weapon upgrade kits.

I know this isn't really the correct thread for this, but if we're talking about vessel balance, the whole magic blueprint factory really needs to be addressed as well at some point.

For me, I don't understand how this system will interact inside the game as I play it yet. I won't be able to understand the system in its place inside the game until I see it there.

    • As a non-raider, am I locked out of designs I would normally operate? Are my (rather modest) designs affected or are they below the T2 threshold? Am I likely to be bummed I can't build better or is better just gilding the lily in single player?
    • Can I construct a HV to perform what I would consider basic mining and collection inside both the mass and CPU constraints with just a core or will I find early game even more of a drag?
    • How possible is a basic SV capable of orbital flight, planetary landing, warp, mining, light combat, and cargo carriage using only T2 extenders?
    • What about a CV base? As a non-server player, how screwed am I if I can't have my base on my playfield most of the time (and thus not growing plants, advancing construction, etc.)?

All these questions matter much more than the mechanical "here's how we calculate the total points available". In isolation, total points are meaningless until I can see what points are spent on and the relative value of the different thresholds.

You do not need to raid the components, you can also buy them from traders (for EXP phase 1 from the Polaris trader in the orbital trading station on the starter orbit) and we might add them to missions as well

@HV: Depens how fast you want to move and what you put in your HV in addition.
@SV: That will probably hard to achive with CPU as CPU is about Specialization..what you describe is a jack of all trades SV ;) But that also depends on what performance you aim for (you can go beyond the T2 CPU points in expense of the Efficiency dropping). So not entirely impossible.
@CV: Also depends..if you keep your CV in space, do not aim for it to be super agile and use SVHV docking for planet-orbit transport..why not? Thruster, RCS and Weapons will be the most COSTLY devices..so if you cut down your devices there, you will gain a lot of build freedom again.

You did not read all the info obviously ;)

Same as the autominer core and weapon kits, you can not ONLY find them in POI, but also by from traders and get them from missions.
