Alright, here is the final list. I will start working on the poll after I post this. Remember, the forum software may not allow me to add all entries to the poll. I am going to be adding the ships in the order they were submitted, wait 2 days, then remove the bottom ranked ships so I can add the remaining entries. Ok, I was hoping the forum would let me delete the poll so I could start a new one. Looks like the forum software will not allow me to do so, I guess I need to start a second thread with the second wave of ships for voting. You can find the thread for the second wave of voting here. (after the mods unlock it )
I extended the polling for both waves until Jan 6th. I figured people may not have voted because of the holiday and wanted to give everyone a chance to vote. (we also have more participants in wave 2 than we did for wave 1)
Ok, the challenge is over and we have a tie for first place. Please take a moment and congratulate @Brimstone & @T431 for their winning entries. Also, @Razorwire for taking second place. Thank you everyone who participated, it was a pleasure to see your creations. Gratz! Maybe do a new challenge with almost the same criteria's, but with 1 large generator, weapons, and that the CV should have an alien look.
If there's to be a new challenge I'd like the criteria to change a fair bit and not put a limit on creativity like it having to look alien or something.
The criteria was it had to look like a spaceship... didn't specify what species might have built it. The idea was to prevent a "cheat" by just sticking a bunch of stuff on a little bit of trussing or something less..
Pretty much, it had to look like a ship, and it had to be safe. I never specified WHO/WHAT the ship was for.
I realize that voting for Wave 1 closed a long while ago. But I took a hiatus from playing Empyrion and I'm more familiar with the game now. If I had the chance, I would've totally voted for Fluffy's Dumbo Dome. It's pleasing to the eye, yet unique and large. Most of all, I really appreciate the large hangar space - large enough for 3 small HV/SV. Very few of the ships in this challenge had any hangar at all and only a couple had a large hangar. To have a hangar that large and still meet the strict guidelines and requirements is quite impressive, IMO. Note: The Alpha Starter CV is also nice. I love the sleek look, large landing space on top and the rather sizeable hangar.
So I have been messing with this same idea for a bit and see a small issue with the power consumption stats in game. The small generator claims output is 2.5 MW which is equal to 2500 kW with 2 that gets me 5000 kW. A small thruster requires 240 kW or .25 MW. So if I have 12 small thrusters, 240 kW x 12 = that's 2880 kW or 2.88 MW. One RCS cost 1 kW, 5 kW for the core and 5 kW for a Warp drive. So let's total it up: Two small generators: +5000 kW Twelve small Thrusters: -2880 kW Warp Engine: -5 kW Core: -5 kW one RCS: -1 kW Total: +2109 kW So why does my power consumption hit 93% on Omicron?
I believe it is based on gravity. The more gravity and resistance any object is subject to the more energy is required to achieve the same accelration (Gross simplification but you get the idea). To test it out for sure start a new game on omicron and test it with the 1.00 gravity. After your first test edit the planet file to alter the gravity but leave everything else the same, start a new game and test again. Cheers!
Omincron has 1.0 G gravity, which you would think would be the base they would start with since that is the gravity of Earth. Akua actually has 0.84 G and it still hits 61% which aligns with the numbers a bit better. However there is still a bit of a logic error here. Said thrusters produce a fixed rate of thrust for a fixed rate of power consumption. So on Earth with 1 G of gravity and 14.7 psi atmospheric density it should always use 240 kW for 8 MN of force (the designed specs) Now I head over to Mars which has 0.3 G or gravity and 0.087 psi atmospheric density and the thruster sudden uses less energy to produce the same thrust. Of course not because mass is constant wherever you go in the universe; mass is not affected by gravity or atmospheric density. What should be happening is the same power consumption but different velocities. 8 MN of force is the same everywhere in the universe the differences is the acceleration and velocity that is achieved. In game terms I should be moving faster on Akua than on Omicorn since Akua has less resistance. We move faster in space than on planets don't we? As it stands right now my ship will just use more energy to lift me off a high gravity planet, instead of not moving at all. I think crashing on an alien planet because the gravity is so high and be stuck would add even more survival options to the game!
Likely, thruster usage is based on travel in space and they secretly use some function of the gravity of the planet (so they would use much more traveling around or landing on a planet). Lately, I've been flying a modified version of the KDY-Artemis-(CV)-Starter. I replaced most of the Thruster Blocks M with several Thruster S for each. This is because Thruster S is much more energy efficient (30% per MN instead of 50%). That, and I added more thrusters to give it better maneuveribility. I figured that because I'm using the more energy efficient thrusters, it would even out because I'm adding more of them. My version has three Fuel Tank (T3) for a total fuel capacity of 18000. (Original Artemis design only had a fuel capacity of 12000.) The reason I bring this up is because I just made the short trip from Akua to neighboring Ningues. But, despite taking only minutes, this trip used about half of my fuel! Looking at the Statistics tab of my Control Panel, I can sort of see why: With my ship just hovering over the surface of Ningues and everything turned on, it's consuming a whopping 8.51 MW. And I don't even have anything power hungry on it, like a Mining Laser or Repair Station. If I turned the Gravity Generator off, it still uses 8.41 MW. If I also turn Oxygen, Lights, Signals and Turrets off, leaving only Thrusters and other stuff that do not have Control Panel switches by default, it still uses 8.35 MW. Thrusters clearly use way too much energy. It should not require half a tank of fuel for a small CV just to travel to the nearest neighboring planet. (That is, in addition to what it requires in Warp fuel.) This is game unbalancing.
I agree with that Thundercraft! Honestly I do not use gravity generators on my CVs since I just don't care about it in single player that much. I typically don't include lights or signals, I have suit lights. I don't use oxygen station or refrigerators either. I place a HV or a SV that has a docking pad and the components I want since those are way more fuel efficient and will run for days without the need to refuel. Before the last update I had an HV with 9 constructors on it to process all my ores, but since I cannot do cobalt, magnesium or the more rare ones now I am kind of forced to have multiple large constructors around now.
Well our acceleration is the same on planet as it is in space (minus the pull of gravity if going up). Which means that even if the thruster says 8mn it cannot possibly be a constant. Could it be that the game makes the thrusters "work harder" in atmosphere based off of the gravity of the planet? Remember real physics need not apply here. We are just looking for game explanation of the power consumption variance. Right or wrong from a physics standpoint initial observations point to gravity being the deciding factor on thruster energy consumption. I am really curious now and will need to test this out tonight. Weekend pseudo science project! Cheers,
