Kostriktor, that is the dumbest posting gimmick I've ever seen. If Empyrion were real life, killing and eating a random animal's meat raw would probably give you a host of parasites and other nasties. Rare steak is a modern day luxury.
Again @Kostriktor , this is a game, not real life. You talk about 'immersion' while walking round with wood from 4 fully grown trees in your backpack or can pick up five 2x2 meter concrete blocks with your hands to build with.
Two Words: Puffer Fish You're going to throw away more than you're going to get to eat from one of these. Now, in Empyrion, we have no cows, or even cow-like creatures that I've seen. Sure, that Trike might weigh in at over a ton, but what percentage of that alien dinosaur meat is actually edible? How much of it is permeated with toxins you can't cook out? Or riddled with parasites you don't want to consume? Now I'm not disagreeing either - there are some issues of both balance and depletion when it comes to food, but perhaps the worst offender of all is the serious issue with Food Storage. Given the fact we're trying to Survive, we seem to be lacking one major component for survival - an effective, efficient means of preserving food. As far back as prehistoric times we figured out that simple things like Drying foods allowed them to be stored for much longer periods of time. Primitive smoking of fresh meats can preserve them for a month. Nothing special needed, just meat, wood and fire. Pemmican, a very simple mix of dried, shredded meat, dried, ground blueberries and rendered fat, will last for years, and was a staple of both Native Americans and early Explorers. Yeah, we can make "rations" which do not spoil, but they are resource-intensive, time-consuming, and have a low output. They do replenish us nicely, so this becomes something of a balancing act. I would certainly not have an issue with low-level dried foods with considerable shelf-lives that provide low levels of nutrition - much like those spiffy little bars we can churn out of our Personal Constructors*, just with some more variety to them. *If you are not aware, if you do not remove those survival bars from your Personal Constructor, they will last indefinitely. They don't start to go bad until they're removed. I typically have 50+ in my Survival Constructor at any given time.
I don't do this very often - but I want to offer up a little education here. Referring to Native Americans as "Redskins" is dreadfully offensive. The term "redskin" has nothing to do with the ruddy complexion common among many Tribes. The term "redskin" was a term created by early settlers who would pay bounties for the scalps of Native Americans, which they termed "redskins". These could fetch prices ranging from $.50 to as much as $2, depending on the area and the level of conflict between settlers and Natives. And just in case you're wondering, no, I am not Native American, though my wife is 1/8 Native American. I have, however, spent a great deal of my time working with Native Americans, as part of the Indigenous Peoples Relief organization, as well as on my own. These were, and many still are, a beautiful people, with a rich, fascinating culture, who lived in harmony with the natural world, and who got the worst possible end of "the shaft" as early non-Native people began expanding across the country.
Lol just landed on this topic. The typical troll thing. It all starts with a consideration based on facts, while emphasizing the impact on the user's emotional balance. Then helpful people try to help/hug the guy. But the guy is crazy upset about just nothing and then starts trolling full steam. I have a 4 years old daughter and I do not allow her yelling like that for things under a common level of adult acceptance. She's 4. She **** on me when she was 0/1/2 and it's alright, but now I am the commander. If she ever **** again on herself I will clean again and give a hug. But I won't when it's intentional. Even if not intentional, shitting all the way around when you're above 18 is to be considered intentional, because the law says you're an adult now. You have the right to vote and even to vote wrong. But not to be offending. @Kostriktor I hope you are just making fun of this thread, because if you would be really serious about the thing, man I'd feel you need to relax alot.
You should have been around earlier when he/she started spouting religious rubbish in a post..... Which has now been removed.. haha
Getting back to the original issue ---- Arguement #1 (bio-compatability) ----------------- --You are on an alien planet in an alien galaxy --The species have evolved independantly the chances are they have a radically different protein makeup (life on earth just happens to use a small protein subset) the chances are they are loaded withalien paracsites and alien bacteria and virus's The chances are that all the 'meat' is highly poisonous to humans lucky if anything is actually edible. so if you want to be pefantic -- eating anything non processed by your suit likely to kill you Argument #2 (watch any survival or wildlife program) ---------------- Explorers don't have a good survival track record without 'native' eating advice evidence : -- All the lost kids and adults in australia etc that turn up starved to death -- the polar explorers 'captain oates' just stepping outside to be eaten -- watch any of the ray mears survival programs about expiditions starving to death -- basically my aguement is 'without specialised local survival knowledge' survival is very difficult - in some cases you can be surrounded by food ( like reed rysomes) or roots - but not even be aware of it. -- as for hunting giant dinosurs - even lions have to defend their kills against other predators which soon turn up -- hyeaneas, vultures , wild dogs ... you could basically only safely have time to grab the meat you can carry and run. -- again more realistic....

I recommend mobility as a solution to this problem, as I do many early game problems. If you can travel efficiently, you can get to stuff you need when you need it. Your first priority upon leaving the escape pod should be getting an HV together.
When I am hungry I eat 5 triceratops. Cooked. 100% legit yea. All survival games have this kind of thing. Otherwise you need to really give crapton of attention to how you implement food and it's not the main point of this game I guess.
