Just found this thread recently and have been working strongly on HV improvements. And can concur with Frederick Taer. The HP below the HV core is what determines your height off terrain. Additional HP are only needed on larger HV's to give more lateral stability. Have built about 20 HV in different configs (many discussed in this post). The HP at core is the only one the game is using to measure distance from terrain directly below that pad. Another interesting find was that if I removed that original pad and placed a block where it was, then put back HP over that block. It did not change height off ground, even by 1 block. Tested this by lifting beside a tall wall and getting out and seeing where on wall height it was. Height was the same both ways. Also tried removing HP from below core and placing somewhere else underneath, but put 2 block then HP. Raised it again. Again identical height. Which means game is using the core for height adjustment, not measuring the pad. Tested this heavily on all sorts of terrain so can say that the core is what determines height. It is 3 meters from core to ground below. I'm using latest game patch. And there has been no change to this.
