Apologies for the Double Post, but @MechPilot524 I found something I hope will help your Morale... had forgotten I had this till I stumbled upon it. Hope it helps.
It just means that I am no longer the leader of BNS and will not do the bulk of the work on new server content. I am perfectly happy to give written advice and hand off all the files and ideas I've had so far, as well as the sector and playfield files, but I do not have the time to finish the nitty-gritty coding myself. I would not be averse to coordinating a group of people who coded it to the specifications I set, if such a thing were to happen.
give me the files and Ideas you have... let me see if I can complete it..it will take time though as I am very busy right now
This seems to be the story of everyone here. Time is FLEETING. I stand before you a simple storage and network man. I will be getting into coding eventually... Today is not that day. Somebody send @Brokenshakles cookies.
I understand man, but I think if anyone wants to bring this idea back, it may help to release whatever work you have made on the solar system for RvB for others to use or work on. As well as any other ideas you may have had.
Nav = Big Damn Hero!!! ^_^ Teach me how to Digitally Transfer Cookies over the Internet & i'd be happy to do so!
Alright, check the RvB forums in the next few hours. I'm uploading the content.zip first with only the sector and playfield files, then all idea concept maps and the word document I made with pretty much all the playfields described. And @Methodik, it's not even very hard coding. Just menial stuff. All you need is Notepad++ configured for YAML files and just follow the patterns that are already in the files. No tabs or anything.
Then peeps like me can attempt to Bug Test the Changes & look for problems... like when I noticed Planets in wrong places, & when I tried to Warp to the GMT Home World to check it out & I never could...
I can pick up on stuff pretty quickly so all I need is a brief runthrough. I think the main problem was that the method to launch the server instance of the game was different than the main RvB server. When I tried the last way I knew how to spin it up, it errored out.
no wonder it taking this much time..it has FREAKING 84 playfields.....I assume you want all of them as different as possible... should we discuss any design decision here or in the server forum?? Edit: can server handle that many playfield?? (with 50 player limit 50 playfield can load at once) what is the intended purpose of the planets?? (I figured out the obvious ones myself obviously)
www.eotegames.com hosts a forum specifically for RvB. I think there is a design thread in there. Someone will have to answer how many playfields are on the server that I have discussed removing. If it was 50, then yes the server can handle 50.
found the thread.. not sure how I missed it max loaded playfield can be handled by limiting the no. of simultaneous player.. I don't think static storage is a concern but the RAM and CPU is as each loaded playfield take up good amount of RAM and CPU... we can have as many playfield as we want ..we just have to limit the no. of player according to the capacity of the server
CPU is a familiar challenge with the primary server due to limitations with hardware that I can offer to run for free. RAM seemed to be manageable, but the processor utilization sat between 90-100 % when multiple folks were on. The test server I believe can hold around 8 at it's current build? It's technically on a better performing server, but is not dedicated like the primary one. Now this is not to say I can't upgrade the hardware, but we would have to start talking currency by way of donations to get there. I have put a decent amount of money into the current hardware already and running it is costly as well (not to mention noisy ). I am still perfectly fine with keeping it all free, but I can't be the sole financier for expansion of this project. Does anyone have some insider info on when the Linux version may be released? This would help immensely with overhead and performance. Last post I saw on the forums back in 2015 was that it is "planned".
problem with me and donation is as I live in India ..after currency conversion even the very little amount become huge(1$=~ 70INR)...but yes..I will help you with whatever I can.. but sadly that won't be a amount which can make any difference
Well in all honesty everything makes a difference, and I'm not looking for donations to fund expansion 100%. A Donate page for eotegames.com is on the list with a few other revenue generating ideas. Thing is we haven't had a large enough following to merit putting a great deal of time into making some things on this list happen. With enough interest though, it can become something worth allocating more time for.
I could try to be of help with Donation in the future... when & how exactly, unsure. Also, last I remember, outlying Systems were in Quadrants & one was a Gold Quadrant where ALL of the Gold would be, others were for POI Raids with PvP Element to them, & I think many if not all of them were probably gonna auto-reset from time to time for Rewards Renewability. Close By Systems were gonna be tame by comparison so risk & exploration of those farther places for stuff, maybe even source for REAL amounts of Erestrum & Zascosium, were gonna be a thing.
That is correct, though I don't think those playfields were going to auto-reset so much as get reset by an admin when they were used up. I also reached out looking for people to make custom POIs that would be extremely difficult compared to now, and also throw in a few... tricks... on the "raid planets". However I am very much looking forward to the AI freighters that will be coming in 5.0 soon, and they could play an interesting role in Solar System 2.0 as well... Essentially, I designed Solar System 2.0 trying to encourage the factions to spread out and assert control over areas. I also designed it with a lot more players in mind, and a higher degree of automation in mind. For example, monitoring a faction's sector with a remote scanning station would be a pretty good idea so that a faction does not constantly need to maintain its presence there. A "server modding API" was introduced in 4.4, but I'm clueless about what that API might do. Solar System 2.0 was in development as early as Alpha 2.0, ages before now, and as far as I know the modding API has nothing to do with what we're doing.
