I don't know if this is supposed to be a new feature of the Alpha 8.5 or if it's just the seed I got for the new game, but in the starter area, and a large swatch around it, there are no resource deposits. However, all over the planet there is tons of Iron and Copper (mostly copper) ore. They're almost as common as trees. However, silicone is extremely rare and although I've found a few iron and copper deposits elsewhere, I have yet to find a single silicone one. Makes starting out very difficult as the only silicone I've gathered is from the few rare rocks.
