Actually the Automatic Doors are even stronger then Hull Blocks, so in addition to being able to work as Giant Access Hatches, they are also superior protection for the Devices inside... as long as ya never accidentally leave the Doors open.
Not to mention, gives it a nice scorpion scaled/armored look. The whole ship looks pretty impressive.
This is so damn true. I hate it when I've cleared the planet of hostiles and spend a few days mining huge deposit empty with Capital vessel acting as a base and when you come back you find out that your cap vessel is laying on it's roof two kilometers away from where you parked it, because some weird tentacle guy just happened to walk over it. I find this super annoying and irritating at same time. Even my flying potato-box weights some serious tonnage so it shouldn't be tossed about like a feather, when something at the size of my Mini-fleet ship walks next to it and bumps into landing gear. There's times when I get so pissed off, with wildlife tossing my stuff around, that I simply kill everything from few km radius before getting to work. You get some meat at same time, but generally if it's not hostile I don't bother with it
Anyways, let's get back to small vessels! Here's last of my Pocket-cruisers, which passed the tests in survival mode ( model III was made with pulse lasers and pulse lasers seem to be both in-efficient and useless). With 6 railguns this thing can one-shot any drone anywhere, also planetary ion cannons are piece of cake, although the destructive power of the railguns is very limited to hard targets, since there's no splash at all on the impact. So this turned out to be more of a "heavy-fighter" instead of proper bulldozer for razing down buildings. Made to look an artillery unit, just because multi-railgun construction has that nice Flak-gun-vibe to it (and they're pretty efficient shooting things down as well). Front view. Back view.
