That's actually strange. When you pick them up this should start a dialogue. What you can try > drop the journal to the ground and pick it up.

Those quests are tricky actually. There are different types of farms, you have to find the right one. And after finding it it's still a random luck On my playthrough I've already build SV and could easily find farms, some quests took me hours, some were barely opt to complete. Raptors — there are special ones at the ruins. Fishes — one has to look for them at deepwaters, others do not count. And as for your initial request, I have no clue. Could it that you found the cards before accessing an obelisk?
