Well I took out a alien base with my new military CV. I landed on the nearest planet for repairs. The drones were putting holes in every part of my ship trying to hit the core or at least my fuel tanks. lol Hiding your core and fuel tanks inside combat blocks keeps you in the fight but it doesn't keep them from tearing your ship a part looking for it . Was it worth it? I don't know but it was fun. lol
Added some guns on one of my WIP CVs. Thinking of a new name for it - it used to be more for transportation, now with hangar doors could be a light combat carrier:
I posted some were before about a arms race about heavy armour and more powerful weapons. Seems what I said has come true. My regular standby SV with standard blocks has done me well. But I thought I would build a version with reinforced steel. Same config just better armour. What a pig to fly now. The extra weight just killed it. Added more thrusters. Still a pig. It now needs a 2nd generator to keep up. What a waste of time and materials.
Sentry Turrets for external threats? Even Cannon Turrets are better then them for that, let alone CV Minigun Turrets post-Buff to allow them to fight in Atmosphere. I think Sentry Turrets are for Internal Defense vs Personnel, thus kinda useless in SP. Some peeps (like me) work better with Brawn Playstyles, some work better with Finesse Playstyles. To each their own.
Small century terets work perfect for drones if your base is on a mountain top. Drones are way to stupid figuring out how to get up the mountains. As they are screwing around the century terets take them out. Plus they are cheap to build and to supply ammo to.
I don't know if you remember the tiny SV I posted a long time ago and then recently updated with new textures? It has three generators and RCS Units tucked away behind the cockpit The only time I've ever had an issue with it is when flight dynamics got screwed up game wide. The lesson? Always over-engineer. For reference:
got stuck on aestus while taking down the drone base. i kept an eye on the map to make sure my cv didnt get harassed. i never saw anything near it, but when i got back it was missing the warpdrive and fuel tanks. luckily it still flies with no fuel tank, but i cant leave the system. i dont have a constructor. luckily its online and my friend who is still on omicron can come save me!
Interesting.. I will try cannon turrets on this ship , I have them on my other ship. I have a lot of missile turrets on this ship and those are doing most of the damage.
Counterpoint: There's no kill like Overkill, so Minigun Turrets are better! By the way, that was a CV in the Pic, not a Base, so more puzzle as to using External Player Sentry Turrets. Note the CV Exclusive CV Pulse Lasers & Rocket Launcher Manual Fire Weapons in those Pics that Bases can't use. Missile Turrets will NEVER hit any Player bothering to try to Dodge, but they can be plenty useful vs NPC Drones cause they're literally too stupid to dodge & tend to eat what ya give'em.
Yesterday I finished my super-compact CV, Super cheap. Cramped, rough-and-ready, not really something you want to be forced to live out of for too long, but a starter CV. "Warp drive on a stick". It's made to feel lived-in by an underlife tramp, though. More here, stats and build costs included. However, I didn't actually feel like playing. So I started another CV. Biggest I've ever done (Mind you, still not THAT big.) This one I'm making use of the new bay doors. I'm aware there's a bug that pops them open if anything's parked too close, it would definitely suffer from this, but I heard that fix is inbound. This one is modeled more as a freighter, will be able to carry a small HV and SV and I plan to stick some turrets on it and aim to build it into a good early CV for survival games.
Tested the new retractable ramps along with the hanger doors . They work well together... This game is getting better by the week.
Thanks.... Im still kind of new to this game. I noticed the NPCs will sit in one spot and let you shoot at them. lol
Warped around a bit with my new CV and made a short expedition to Aitis to get a basic supply of Erestrum for the cool weapons. Also paid the "Trading Outpost" asteroid field a visit. I find most space bases rather easy to take out with my SV, but Laser Space Drones freak me out. These things are too damn fast to hit them when they fly past, and once they have aligned themselves with me their crazy rate of fire takes out my cockpit before I can hit them. At least my CV's minigun turrets make short work of them, but that solution seems rather inelegant... PS: It seems the Thermica Station at the "Trading Outpost" coordinates has neither weapons nor core. Is it intended as some derelict, neutral base that can be taken over by the player?
Sentry turrets are alright for taking care of wildlife around your base (damn spiders!) and since its one of the few things that shares ammo with regular guns, supplying it isn't so difficult. If you set up a Croghum Farm then you'll be swimming in ammo. Massed sentry turrets can be brutal, I kamikaze'd the Shipyard in omicron orbit and lost my SV, couldn't even get near my backpack due to all the turrets. Although now that I know where the core is, doing it again would be a lot easier.
I had a similar experience (nearly) with the shipyard near the Trading Outpost asteroid field. Had to retreat several times from the massed sentry gun fire after easily taking out the plasma turrets with my SV. The solution was to sit outside the range of the sentry guns, leave the cockpit and take out the sentry guns with the sniper rifle (found the epic one somewhere on Akua), it was just two shots each then.
Wait, what? What are those and where the heck do I get them? I've never seen anything like those. O.O
Last time I took out that base I parked directly above the base. Alien Terets couldn't shoot straight up. It was like shooting ducks in a barrel.
