I love being able to use that tag "FEEDBACK REQUIRED" for this thread. Anywho, I was wondering what others thought about it? I found it to be deplorably bad, but I do not wish to steer or bias this thread too much and thus will wait to see if others think before I share my thoughts. To be clear, if you liked it please do not be afraid to post here; I do not want to take that away from anyone. So do not feel as though this is a trap thread with my congenial first post as the bait.
I liked it in general, but the season was too short. I miss the days when series used to be 23 episodes long; it really gave the writers room to grow a character and explore. This was too rushed. Side note - I am not looking forward to the 6 episode season of The Expanse. Ridiculous.
I started it, but lost track of what was going on so I might restart it. On the other hand, "Wheel of Time" on Amazon Prime is really entertaining! Spoiler: Yennifer I made it to the 5th or 6th episode and Yennifer lost her powers! That pissed me off, so I watched the Wheel of Time instead.
Yeah, that tends to be a Netflix problem in general. I am not sure what combination of forces/incentives yields such results either; is it some kind of focus group testing that suggests that people want "more new" as opposed to re-watching?(my own interaction with Netflix would suggest the opposite - I love re-watching shows while eating) Is it trying to spread out their funds to cover more stuff? Is it licensing difficulties? Is it their trying to mimic the HBO Game of Thrones model with just 9 - 10 episodes per season? Is it good ole fashion "they have no idea what they are doing?" Etc etc etc. When you look through Netflixs carousels it is beginning to feel like looking back on a vast assembly of wreckage due to the passage of Netflix through/along the abstraction of, say, a road with the wreckage littering the sides. Specific to the series; it wasn't just rushed, it was rushed and disjointed, even halting. An example: Like the times when he brought up frustrations with Ciri(i.e. classic parent "she doesn't do what she's told") despite their not being any examples of said behavior in the show itself? It felt very strange and I could not rally to the moment. Amazon hit things out of the park with "The Boys" so I am game to take recommendations about them.
I think it's solely based on budget. HBO/Game of Thrones was expensive, so they cut alot out of the story and shortened the seasons, especially towards the end. Studios, regardless of what name they carry (netflix, amazon, warner bros, etc.) have all lost their appetite for investing in shows. I remember reading somewhere that Star Trek: The Next Generation cost $1 million dollars per episode just for special effects; doesn't include sets, labor, actor salaries, etc., and they had 23 episodes a season. Star Trek: Discover (which is utter garbage in comparison) only has 13 episodes per season, and actually is cheaper to produce in the special effects area because of computers. Sorry to derail the thread. To get back on track: Witcher season 2 was alright. I haven't read the books or played the games, so I'm just rolling along with it even though it was short. And yes, Wheel of Time (which I did read a loooong time ago) is really good so far. Wait...did I just derail us again? haha
Bit of both really -- Season 1 was basically All Yennefer's story -- but at least you got some actual Witcher content and was pretty balanced-- Season 2 is Cirri's story (i really don't like her) - but there is No Real witcher stuff without cirri story -- i mean Geralt and Yennefer etc side stories -- killing things not on the main storyline --- you know the basic gameplay stuff --- I really hope we get some actual witchering in a third season - but knowing netflix it'll be All Cirri with Geralt again in the background ---- Noticed they're trying to do a pre-quel series where they can entirely rid themselves of that 'Actual witcher'
So I just went to go start the Wheel of Time based on these recommendations, but then upon clicking on the banner noticed that almost half the reviews are excessively negative? Do not get me wrong, I like to make up my own mind on things, but after my frustrations with the Witcher Season 2 I think I will wait a bit. You are the first person I have ever met that does not like Ciri - OR, do you not like Netflixs Ciri? I have only played about half of the 3rd Witcher game and Ciri was awesome, and I do not know her from the books. Perhaps you did not like her portrayal there as well? Either way, I was curious why you added that last part - entirely ridding themselves of that "Actual witcher." That is just another way of saying that you want more witcher-oriented content like you started with? I.e. fighting more monsters or backstory? Or did you mean something else?
i suppose i didn't like the series Cirri -- i have read some of the books (find them slightly depressing) and Played the 1st witcher game -- in the end thats really what i'm missing - in the Netflix series (season 2) Geralt is just sort of in the background - more of a support character - he is complete and unchanging and not really explored, he#s just there to hit monsters - it was one long story without the 'breaks' of the 1st series where you got some 'witchery' episodes (think side quests) w/o the relentless story arc -- which is far more in keeping with the Games, i also kind of remember the books as more episodic) - in the netflix series 2 you are meant to see it all from Cirris perspective not really geralt's i believe --- But i love Yennifer (think Triss was sort of sidelined) -- but citrri -- bleahhh.
