I mentioned this on the steam forum and just wanted the open up the discussion on official.. I dipped a little bit into space engineers today to see how its shaping up. Personally i still think empyrion is better as there is so much gameplay and more in EGS. SE is less game, more building sim. However there are three things i believe SE has the edge on.. 1. The conveyor system - (theres something wierdly satisfying about it when it works and the realism helps the immersion), but that would basically void all current workshop builds so cant see that happening. 2. The flight/collision model - they have gravity wells, so you can properly orbit. Thrust 'feels' right. You have to fly skillfully or youre treated to a spectacular display of the physics engine at work. (Different game engine i guess?) 3. The sound design. Guns sound 'meaty' in SE rather than annoying and whiney (no bass to it) Sound deadens when you put your helmet on and is nearly nullified in the vacuum of space. I think with a little focus on the sound design of the game, EGS will be mich improved. (I loved 'final space' on netflix, mainly because the music and sound was so perfect
I imagine quite a few of the sounds will be revisited as development continues. I for example would love to have the forest sounds tuned down a little bit. There are like 20 different birds chirping simultaneously along with monkeys howling and I think a random cat hiss from time to time. I imagined it was just a placeholder until it could be readdressed at the appropriate time. I do agree though that the guns could really use a revisit. The sound of the artillery guns should shake your base. Make the laser guns go pew pew... pew pew pew pew if they want but we know what ballistic weapons sound like. I wanna here some DAKKA DAKKA!
The specific sounds aren't as important as reliable sound cues and positional audio. Your first indication of most attackers is some kind of call out, seemingly coming from everywhere. Your second is an attack sound, again seemingly coming from everywhere. You don't hear booted footsteps around a corner or clawed feet rustling through the grass behind you. Neither can you hear from which direction a sentry gun is shooting. SE's feature set is not applicable to Empyrion. SE does not have separate playfields, thruster torque, aerodynamics, fuel tanks, or wireless logistics. The only thing I can think of that would really be applicable is the fungiblity of structure types, but that's more of a wish list item than a required system.
I have been told when younger to close my mouth when eating. Empyrion "feeding" sounds are disgusting.
Ok. So next time you eat some chips cover your Ears with your Hands and try NOT to listen to your eating sounds
I don't really mind the crunching sounds. I dislike the slurping and loud swallowing sounds. There are parts of the game where realism is welcome. These are more... "personal". I know these are not "my" eating sounds, so it's like someone else is putting his food in my player's mouth. Eleon could fix this.
