I have created a Capital Vessel which was doing great until today. Suddenly it sprouted holes in it. The game knows the blocks exist there, but they leave a gaping view into the guts of the ship. The blocks "disappeared" spontaneously while I was working on the ship, it was not when I spawned it. EDIT: My friend helped me and we figured this out. The problem is the kinked pipe and the L pipe adjacent to each other. So, now I have solved it at least well enough that I can stop it from destroying my builds anymore. The following is a commentary on my attempts to fix it and may not be interesting or useful. I have attached 2 files, one is a bugged version and one is 2 hours older and is healthy. The holes are located on the bottom of the ship and if you fly up into the hole, in the ceiling above that, in the same spot. One of the lowest section windows also has a missing section. I did save it, but I have an older blueprint with around 2 hours less work on it. That one has no glitched blocks that I have found. The saved one with the glitched blocks, I saved for the purpose of making this report (and in hopes of salvaging the build). A save game is not necessary because it appears consistently in any world, etc. I have tried everything I could to fix it. I used the N building panel, and unfortunately, the build is completely ruined because even though technically those blocks are "there," they can't be removed or anything. Can't be filled in, can't be deleted, can't be replaced in any way using that tool or any other. The only thing I have found which fixes this (sometimes) is to make a new "CV starter" block and copy and paste the entire build onto it. While that usually works, it doesn't always, and so far it has not for this build (unlike my base build).
Repeatable and verifiable. In the attached photo, please see the image. The configuration of the RED ones in relation to each other creates the "holes". Then blocks that are added to them seem to "extend" the hole/ gap. It can be reproduced and consistently creates the same issue. The spikey tip also with the corners causes it.
Here is my other build where this happened. I highlighted in red the corner at question. However, there are also others highlighted with dark orange with yellow light. If you flip those fences around, you'll notice the "hole" appears and disappears. My friend believes this is due to the optimization where it attempts to hide "unnecessary" surfaces. These can each be removed or rotated and you'll find that it causes and uncauses the bug. If you use godmode to clip into and out of the pipes, you'll see the problem with where the faces inside of the pipes are and are NOT being hidden. You'll see a side of the pipe NOT hidden while a hole appears elsewhere in the build, as you rotate them in place using multitool.
It appears you have gone over the unity chunk triangle count limit by placing too may of the pipes blocks which are expensive blocks In the screenshots shots you should see I ave removed 2 pipe blocks & some of the removed blocks become visible again. If or when we can improve this situation with such blocks we will approach it (in fact there may be some improvements not that far away but no ETA as of this reply). For now your only solution is to remove some of the pipe blocks.
Yes, I have removed some, thank you. I thought you might want to know what we figured out. I have placed a good number of other blocks and other pipe blocks in general (since removing those). I honestly don't think that there's a "number limit" on them, or I would not have been able to place more. I removed the offending ones, and I also edited in about the optimization / visual hiding of the block surfaces. Wishing you all the best in getting it fixed! Love your game, really enjoy and appreciate it!
@Nimmanu : the pipes and all blocks with round shapes are the worse for building large ships and structures, they often cause this kind of issue. Some builders (thinking of @Siege Inc. here) noticed that a long time ago. Games love triangles, but they hate curves.
I also want to say, I'm very impressed and appreciative of the fast and pleasant response, @Pantera I'm picking up on that, @Kassonnade but I have found that in every case where I've gotten this issue, it has been pipe blocks, and that rotating them in position actually can remove the hole. It seems to have everything to do with the visual optimization. If you place cubes with the offending blocks, it expands the hole. If you place blocks elsewhere, it doesn't. It's directly connected. I'm a fan of HUGE builds, so I end up with this little bug a lot. Peculiar how sometimes the copy/paste method words, lol.
Build: V1.6.1 3510 Mode: Singleplayer/multiplayer Mode: Creative/survival SERVER NAME: Singleplayer SEED-ID: If applicable: MODIFIED PLAYFIELDS: none Reproducibility: Reliable Severity: Severe Type: Blueprints Summary: Invisible blocks one larger CVs Description: Certain Blueprints that were spawning in correctly in 1.5 now spawn in with zones of invisible blocks. happens to multiple blueprints saved locally and at least 1 of my blueprints that was posted to the workshop and last updated June 3rd, 2021. This is reproduce-able by multiple people who have blueprint files created prior to 1.6. The ones I can confirm affected are vanilla blueprints of varying class size and block counts/types. Steps to Reproduce: 1) Spawn Blueprint in 2) 3) Screenshots, Crash Logs, any other Relevant Information or Download links: I have also attached the CF-Chainbreaker STD which is one of the blueprints affected
I spawned in the workshop blueprint linked above and some of the blocks were invisible to me. I then copy pasted the entire ship to a new CV starter block and that made all the blocks appear. I saved it as a new blueprint and then spawned it and the blocks were still visible. But then when I used the prefabinfo -clearpivot command on the blueprint and then spawned it in again the blocks were invisible again. Reproduce: Spawn the attached blueprint in a creative game. Save it as a new BP. Use prefabinfo -clearpivot on the new blueprint. Spawn it and it will be missing blocks.
After slicing through his build it seems like the culprit is too many cylinder 6-way blocks. I managed to reproduce the issue with a simpler test case. If you load the attached BP and then add one more cylinder 6-way block to the red section (a chunk, I assume) it will start deleting faces. I assume this may explain the clearpivot behavior Ravien mentioned because setting the pivot will change the chunk boundaries?
I guess at some point it's a faces-per-chunk limit. Also I was wrong about the chunk area in the attached blueprint, I have since realized it is smaller than I marked which makes more sense with where the faces start getting removed.
When I saw the picture of the interior of his Vessel with all those (Alien)Connector Blocks my thoughts were going toward the Triangle Count. But as I am no Builder I kept my Trap shut until someone with a more analytic mind like you stepped forward.
I had the same thought but the overall triangle count of the different blueprints affected was different, so perhaps its triangles per chunk then?
Yeah, seems like it's per chunk. I can add blocks to any section outside of that red area and not have faces get deleted. But I'm at the limit of what I understand at this point.
Ah yeah, having too many cylinder blocks in the same space will do that. So this is not actually a bug but rather a technical limit.
Yes, this is a (good) limitation since ever. Please avoid using that 6-connector block at all cost anyways. It has over 500 triangles I think (a regular cube has 12). Ruins the performance for no reason.
